The Grant-born, but Teton-raised, became a living legend in gunfighting, the notorious "44" for his gun prowess, as evidenced by his ability to hit 29 targets in 4.4 seconds. Later, using that keen eye-hand coordination, he parlayed it into being the most famed fighter pilot in the galaxy.
The marketplace settles into its rhythm once more, the tension easing as Arty moves from stall to stall. The goods exchange hands with quiet efficiency, fresh produce, bundles of herbs, and jars of preserves leaving Teton in exchange for Grant’s exquisitely crafted tools. As a boy, Arty’s first taste of Teton was a roasted kuri, or chestnut, its shell blackened and its flesh sweet and earthy, still warm from the embers of the vendor’s cart. He chews slowly, savoring the flavor and the knowledge that he has earned this himself.
To hone his skills, Arty took a job at a local carnival, manning the shooting gallery. The carnival was a cacophony of sounds, the laughter of children, the clinking of coins, and the distant music of a calliope. Each night, after the carnival closed, usually inaugurated by the lights on the carousel being turned off, he would practice tirelessly. Each try was timed with a motion detector and displayed generously on an electronic timer high above the booth that clocked the targets existence during the session – the timer would continue until all 29 targets were extinguished.
Aloysius visited the carnival and subsequently the shooting gallery to test his skill. Aloysius, took the booth given disruptor and shot all 29 targets in 4.205 secs flat. Arty was flabbergasted. With his 8.000 seconds, he thought he might as well have been blindfolded compared to Mr. Horn’s time. Horn decided to train Arty. Subsequently, Arty's skill improved. So, much so, Arty's remarkable skill earned him the nickname "Forty-four," a testament to his ability to draw and fire and hit all the targets in 4.4 seconds. News of his prowess spread quickly, and the stories of "Forty-four" reached far and wide, even catching the attention of those beyond Teton.
